Filtering the World Through Gratitude: A Walk with My Son

Life often offers us two perspectives: one where we focus on what’s wrong, and one where we choose to focus on what’s right. The difference between these two perspectives isn’t just about seeing the glass as half full—it’s about realizing that the direction of our attention shapes our experience. Recently, during a walk with my son, I was reminded of how powerful it can be to choose where we direct our focus.

Embracing Challenges

It wasn’t the perfect walk. In fact, there were plenty of moments that could have soured the experience if I had chosen to focus on them.

At the start, I was already feeling discomfort. The weather was colder than I had anticipated, and I quickly found myself sweaty and uncomfortable. My son, filled with boundless energy and curiosity, was distracted by every leaf, car, and crack in the pavement. We couldn’t keep a steady pace, which tested my patience. There were moments when it felt like everything was working against us—the near-miss car crash at an intersection that left me rattled, a loud truck that frightened my son, and the iguana he thought was a threat. To top it off, a stranger misgendered him, calling him “she” despite our corrections.

At first, it was easy to focus on all the things going wrong. The discomfort of the cold, the tension of a scared child, and the frustration of being misunderstood could have easily defined the entire experience. But then, something shifted.

The Power of Gratitude in the Moment

I realized in that moment that I had the power to choose where I directed my attention. Sure, I could focus on what went wrong, but I could also choose to focus on what went right. I decided to do just that.

The change in perspective was almost immediate. The weather, though chilly at first, eventually settled into a perfect balance—not too hot, not too cold. My son’s infectious laughter, as he explored the world around him, reminded me of the beauty in small moments. And the best part? My son, completely unprompted, turned to a driver who had stopped to let us cross and said, “Thank you. Have a nice day.”

His kindness, at such a young age, filled me with pride. That small act of gratitude was a bright spot in the midst of everything else and reminded me that we can always find something to be thankful for, even on difficult days.

The Gift of Connection

I also found myself deeply grateful for the simple fact that I got to spend that time with my son. The walk wasn’t just about physical movement—it was about connection. We walked 5,000 steps, each one creating a deeper bond between us. As we moved along, I was able to teach him important lessons about safety and independence, and we shared a quiet, meaningful moment that strengthened our relationship.

By focusing on gratitude, I was able to see the walk not as a series of inconveniences, but as a beautiful, shared experience. Even the challenges—whether it was dealing with his fear of the truck or the stranger’s misunderstanding—became part of the story, a story of love, growth, and learning.

Shifting Your Focus: A Choice You Can Make

The lesson here isn’t that everything magically turns out perfect when we focus on gratitude. Life’s difficulties don’t disappear. But when we choose to focus on what’s right, we open ourselves to more moments of joy, growth, and connection. Gratitude doesn’t erase the struggles; it simply shifts the way we see them.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of dwelling on the negatives. It’s human nature to focus on what’s wrong—on discomfort, frustration, or confusion. But we all have the power to shift our perspective. When we focus on gratitude, we invite more of it into our lives, allowing us to see more beauty, kindness, and joy in everyday moments.

So, whether you’re out for a walk with a loved one, facing a challenging day, or navigating tough times, try this: filter your world through gratitude. Notice the small joys, the unexpected moments of kindness, and the beauty that often goes unnoticed. You might just find that your world begins to reflect more of what you choose to focus on.
